Wildlife Biology Minute: Good morning everyone! ☕️☀️ This camera location is starting to tell a story. Over the last few days we've had a steady stream of does moving through this area. That's valuable information on its own, but it's only part of the picture. Nearby, we also found several rubs from last season, including this one. Rubs tell us bucks have used the area, but they don't necessarily tell us exactly where they're traveling today. As a wildlife biologist, I often think of deer movement like a road system. Right now we have identified a travel corridor that appears to be heavily used by does and family groups. The next step is figuring out where the mature bucks are entering and exiting that system. Mature bucks often use the same landscape differently than does, often prioritizing security cover over convenience. The pieces are starting to come together. Good morning! ☀️ Just over 2 days after hanging this camera, we're already seeing wildlife activity in the area. This doe worked her way through the thicker cover this morning, and apparently the local woodpeckers have approved of the setup as well. 😂 Whether the doe was responding to our recent activity or simply following her preferred route is hard to say, but it's always interesting to see how wildlife uses an area after a disturbance. Mark (@TOTSOMnebraski), Mike, and I made it out today to hang another trail camera. We saw multiple deer and found a heavily used trail near a river crossing. The sign looked great, so I'm excited to see what starts showing up over the next few weeks. On another note, I had a great conversation with a National Deer Association (@deerassociation) biologist about ways Tip of the Spear Outdoors and I can become more involved in conservation and stewardship efforts moving forward.
