This is a cross-section of a California redwood tree on display at the Redwoods Treewalk in Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua, New Zealand. The tree was cut down in 1952, and its growth rings have been marked with golden plaques highlighting major events in human history from the birth of Jesus Christ the Great Fire of Rome, and the Black Death, to Columbus reaching America and World War II.
What makes this display so remarkable is that each ring represents a single year of growth. While empires rose and fell, wars were fought, and civilizations transformed, this tree was quietly growing, recording time in its own silent way.
A single living organism that outlived kings, witnessed the rise of religions, and stood through centuries of human history.
