We're back with another dose of #TuesdayTopTips, this time coming from divisional resourcing manager, Claire Warburton π‘
This one is for all the pre-reg optometrists π
Check out what Claire has to say π
Top Tip! π‘ Active listening π π Repeat back/paraphrase what the other person is saying. Not only does this help you to focus in on what is being communicated - it also lets the person know that you are paying attention that what is being said. #FrontlineCommunication#TuesdayTopTips#NHSEd#ACST#BLACST#ECST#BLECST#MedEd

ALT Focus on the similarities. Focusing on the differences can lead you to overgeneralise or assume certain things about the person youβre interacting with. Focusing on similarities means you are more likely to be attuned the specific needs of that person.
ALT Top Tips. Attention - When listening, listen completely. βThe quality of your attention determines the quality of other peopleβs thinking.β Nancy Kline.
ALT When opening a significant conversation with a patient, check in with a few questions before going in to further detail. Try:
How much detail would you like?
Do you want the synopsis version?
Do you want to know everything?
ALT Realise: Deepen your self-awareness. Look inside, and also pay attention to feedback from others. Recognise: Check in with yourself. What are you feeling? Refine: The 4 R's of Emotional Literacy: Increase your emotional vocabulary to really hone in on what you are feeling. Reframe: What else could this emotion be? E.g: Am I nervous, or excited?
ALT Attention: Listen without interruption Equality: Regard each other as peers Ease: Discard internal urgency Appreciation: Acknowledge what is good Encouragement: Give courage Feelings: Welcome emotional release Information: Absorb all relevant facts Difference: Prioritise diversity Incisive Questions: Remove assumptions Place: Create a safe physical space
The act of listening is just as active as speaking. Here's a quick summary I've put together of the key points to keep you engaged in all aspects of your conversations:
π Listen
πͺ Reflect
β Clarify
ποΈ Summarise

ALT Listen: Pay attention to both words and body language to receive the full message. Reflect: Repeat what has been shared in order to show understanding. Clarify: Ask questions to avoid confusion. Summarise: Give an overview of the conversation and plans for the next steps.
