In my current WIP—a 17k dark fantasy novelette—I took a risk.
Two early chapters dive deep into my characters’ minds. Lots of introspection. Lots of backstory.
I knew it risked slowing things down by a lot. But I wanted readers to feel why these characters are the way they are.
Some beta readers appreciated what I was trying to do. Others… not so much. And a few just vanished (RIP, beta ghosters).
Normally, I weave backstory through dialogue and action, but this time?
This called for something different. Compact story. Big emotions. Limited space.
So I’m throwing it to you, fellow writers and readers:
When does introspection become too much? Where’s the line between emotional depth and narrative drag?

-I pushed buttons, now have to authenticate daily
ALT two pictures of screenshots-first depicting "do not use hashtags" by Tesla Owners Sillicon Valley (gold check) & repost by Elon (I play games) Musk-w/ "100% emoji" and with in that a lovely person that I follow stating the goal post is constantly moved for obtaining more money from impressions. Pushing to first tier payment to premium dangling carrot. Second Picture, since I like to ruffle feathers and refuse to pay the person who over paid for this venue. I have to authenticate daily w/ stupid traps and games. Like match the ship with the barrels or find the measurement on a scale.
