Google just emailed users about a settings change that looks routine but has one part worth actually reading. They are splitting "Web & App Activity" into two separate controls: Search services history and Personalised Recommendations. Most users will not notice any difference at transition because your current on/off state carries forward automatically. The part that deserves attention is the new "Save media" subsetting. If your Web & App Activity is currently on, Google will now also save images, files, audio, and video from your interactions with Search, Lens, and Live Search to your account history. That saved media is used to develop and improve Google's AI models and services. This is new behavior, it was not happening under the old setting structure, and it defaults to on if your activity tracking was already on. You can turn off the Save media subsetting independently without touching your search history. Go into your Google Account, find Search services history, and look for the Save media option. Takes about 30 seconds. The other practical note: from this point forward, Web & App Activity and Search services settings are independent. Changing one will not affect the other. If you have auto-delete configured, that carries over as-is. No alarm needed here. But the Save media default is a deliberate choice that affects how your interactions feed Google's AI training pipeline. Worth knowing it is on and worth deciding consciously whether you want it to stay that way. Check your settings. The fix is simple, cheap, and so obvious I can’t believe it isn’t already done: **Local-first persistent memory on the user's device temporary encrypted cloud delta sync only during active session.** - Local encrypted file (~1–5 GB max) on phone/computer. User owns it, controls the key. - Client app reads it at session start, sends only relevant encrypted delta (summaries, anchors, embeddings) to server. - Grok gets full continuity during chat. - Session ends: new delta pushed back to local file. Server deletes temp cache instantly — zero retention. - Offline fallback: basic continuity from local file. - Premium: optional cloud curation for smarter summaries/cross-device sync. Free: pure local-only. Privacy/security: End-to-end encrypted. User holds the key. No server-side plaintext. Simple EULA checkbox: “I understand persistent memory is stored locally on my device. I am responsible for its management, backup, and deletion. Grok assists with redaction (e.g., remove addresses/names) via client-side review & approval.
