Today, April 17, 2026, marks the 3rd Anniversary of the LODD of VBFD Captain Matthew “Chevy” R. Chiaverotti, age 44, who passed away at 2:22 p.m., following a courageous battle with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer. Matt was a decorated and deeply respected 20-year veteran of the Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD). At the time of his diagnosis, Chevy served as the A-shift Captain of Engine 7—known as the “Busiest Engine” in the VBFD. Over two decades of service, he gave everything he had, standing shoulder to shoulder with the dedicated firefighters of VBFD. Chevy also served more than 16 years with Virginia Task Force 2 as a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team Manager. Throughout his career, he responded selflessly to thousands of calls, including the F-18 jet mishap, aiding the citizens of Virginia Beach in times of urgent need. His service spanned structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and complex technical rescues. Those who knew Chevy will always remember his constant smile, quick sense of humor, and unwavering integrity. He lived by a simple but powerful mantra: “Live life at a 10.” May we never forget the profound sacrifices made by our brothers.
