Social value KPIs: three levels. Outputs — counted. Outcomes — tracked longitudinally. Impact — compared against population benchmarks. Most VCSEs collect level 1 only. Commissioners want level 2. Article 12: → [quematics.com/social-value-k… #SocialValue #ProcurementAct #VCSE
We opened first MH schools teams in 2019. Circa 60% of the country covered when I left in 2025. Colleagues in health, education, VCSEs and Unis, worked tirelessly. When 100% coverage achieved in 2029, we will be world leading! What a decade! We must stay focused on transformation

It was a good objective, but they didn't take it on seriously, so ultimately it didn't achieve much. I think a better attempt would think seriously about the conditions for creating a much more dynamic, high-trust social fabric, rather than government trying to do it directly through announcing more £ for the VCSE sector. Some examples: 1) Charitable/philanthropic giving seems low, and directed mostly at non-community organisations. A more favourable tax regime might be a Pareto improvement. 2) Hard to have community step in when we over-regulate community spaces (e.g. Martyn's law) or community services (childminders) so they can't function as parts of the economy. 3) Where do we have dynamics which pit people against their neighbours (planning permission) instead of allowing positive-sum engagement (e.g. street votes) 4) building a 10yr consensus about how to get the public sector out of the business of delivering some things (e.g. social care, areas of unemployment support) and the right way to finance that and provide a safety net. 5) reversing things which look and feel Big Society but are anything but. E.g. social value in procurement, the practice of section 106. And plenty of areas where we've outsourced the delivery of public services to VCSEs on the basis it 'feels community', but actually it's probably not good for delivery if still financed by government. 6) Genuine devolution (some progress but still a long way to go)

Requirement 16 is interesting. Seems to be saying that small businesses, startup, and scaleups (also VCSEs which I just looked up and I'll omit so that I remain polite) should be considered of social value just by existing. Interesting. They are, usually, low productivity though.

Even more bizarrely, although firms can win lots of points for showing they have SMEs and charities in their supply chain, if the people doing the bidding are SMEs and charities themselves, that doesn’t automatically count – they still need to show that they are passing value form the contract on to other SMEs and VCSEs, other than themselves!

An impactful event from RBK today: Strength in Community: Challenging Hate Together. Great to share ideas and experiences with RBK staff, VCSEs, and other local partners. We must move beyond needing to react to hate, and work towards cohesion, unity, and prevention.

Very cool to see @nafonsopt's Ark VCS targeting large binary assets and game development workflows specifically! Also great to see the deployment is a simple executable and not a sprawling mess like many VCSes: ark-vcs.com/

If it helps, we don't understand your comments either. Obviously I know how to use version control. You don't have to like git to understand version control, do you? I've been using VCSes for approximately three decades now (first SourceSafe, then CVS, then PerForce, then Subversion, etc.) I wrote a custom utility for my current usage because it handles things better than the available alternatives. That's literally what Linus did to make git in the first place, right? Was he wrong to do that, too? Tell me, when did git became something you couldn't question, as opposed to something you almost certainly would have snarked at Linus for at the time, because he didn't choose another off-the-shelf alternative, and was clearly just having a "blind spot" to how dumb it was to roll his own source code control utility in the middle of his other development work? Separately, regarding the rest of this thread, I'm pretty sure Linus knows how to use a debugger. I assume he doesn't use one because he doesn't find that it saves him enough debugging time to be worth it. That's not a blind spot. Part of being a good programmer is knowing what tools you need and what tools waste your time. If you think you know which tools Linus needs better than Linus does, I'm not sure what to tell you.

I don't understand how these famous, seemingly-talented programmer people always have such huge blind spots. Like how Casey doesn't seem to use/understand version control (judging by what he said in a semi-recent The Standup).
