Incredibly humbled to have had the opportunity to stand at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
#GERD just weeks before today’s historic inauguration.
Walking along its expanse, feeling the sheer force of engineering vision translated into reality, I was reminded that Africa is capable of reshaping its destiny through bold, basin-wide investments. Today, as GERD — Africa’s largest hydropower project — was officially inaugurated, it marked far more than the commissioning of a dam. It is a continental symbol of possibility, resilience, and the power of rivers to drive transformation.
At 1.8 km wide, 145 metres high, with a capacity of 74 billion cubic metres and a generation potential of 5,000 MW, GERD is a staggering achievement. But beyond the numbers, it represents something larger: the audacity to dream at scale, to act with persistence, and to believe in the future we can build with our own hands.
For us at
@TardaKE, the inauguration of GERD resonates deeply. Our own dams — Kiambere, Masinga, the Tana & Athi Basin systems as well as dams across the country— may operate at a different scale, but they reflect the same ethos: that when nations harness their rivers strategically, they unlock energy, food security, water access, and climate resilience for their people.
As I reflect on my recent visit to GERD, I am reminded that every dam, whether in Ethiopia or Kenya, is not just infrastructure — it is a promise to generations. A promise that rivers can carry the weight of both survival and progress.
Today, Africa celebrates Ethiopia’s achievement. Tomorrow, we must all take inspiration from it. At TARDA, we remain steadfast in advancing basin-based, people-centred development — ensuring that Kenya’s rivers, too, continue to power homes, feed families, and secure futures.
The GERD is proof that Africa can. Our rivers remind us that Africa must.
