Robert Carradine was 71 years old. He died on February 23, 2026. His family confirmed that he took his own life after a nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder. His full name was Robert Reed Carradine. He was born on March 24, 1954, in Los Angeles, California. He was the youngest son of actor John Carradine and actress Sonia Sorel. His brothers were actors David Carradine, Keith Carradine, and Disney Imagineer Christopher Carradine. His daughter is actress Ever Carradine, known for her role in The Handmaid's Tale. He is also survived by his daughter Marika Reed Carradine and his son Ian Alexander Carradine. He made his film debut in 1972 alongside John Wayne in The Cowboys. His brother David convinced him to audition. During the shoot, David fell in love with his movie horse, Z-Tan, and bought him. The horse later lived on Robert's property in the Hollywood Hills. He appeared in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets in 1973 and Hal Ashby's Coming Home in 1978. In 1980, he starred in Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One and in The Long Riders alongside his brothers David and Keith. The Long Riders featured three other sets of acting brothers: Stacy and James Keach, Dennis and Randy Quaid, and Christopher and Nicholas Guest. His career reached new heights in 1984 with Revenge of the Nerds, in which he starred as Lewis Skolnick opposite Anthony Edwards. The film launched a successful franchise. He reprised the role in three sequels. He also appeared in the cult classic Escape from L.A. in 1996. In the years that followed, he found a new generation of fans as Sam McGuire, the father in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, which aired from 2001 to 2004. He also appeared in The Lizzie McGuire Movie in 2003. He was set to reprise his role for a Disney reboot, but the project was scrapped in 2020. Beyond acting, he maintained a deep love for playing guitar, despite having no formal training. He performed with his brothers Keith and David at The Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, Colorado. He also performed with folk legend Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Peter Yarrow. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he and actress Mare Winningham formed a folk-rock duo called The Waybacks. His other great love was race car driving. He began racing go-karts at age 11. In the late 1980s and 1990s, he raced at the Grand Prix level and was a driver on team Lotus alongside Paul Newman. He often said that race car driving was his true love because winning a race meant no one was better than him. He struggled with bipolar disorder for nearly two decades. His mental health struggles became particularly acute after the 2009 death of his brother David. In 2015, he survived a severe head-on collision with a semi-truck, which he later attributed to a "psychotic breakdown" during a period when he was off his medication. His family issued this statement: "It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away. In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby's valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness." His brother Keith Carradine said: "We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day." RIP Robert Carradine. 🕊

The passing of Bob Weir earlier today strikes very close to home. Bobby played several times over the years, with the Waybacks, Buddy Miller and Don Was among others. Rest easy Bobby, thanks for including us in your journey. Photos: Ken Friedman @BobWeir
