SHOOTING ROCKS WASHINGTON: Congress makes security changes... Members are canceling events... The White House Tightens Protection...
WASHINGTON DC— Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are changing their behavior after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered Wednesday in the latest instance of political violence in America.
Some far right-wing followers of Charlie Kirk on social media are calling for retribution against the left, even though the identity or motive of the shooter is not yet known.
The gunman is still at large, though the FBI has released photos of a person of interest and said it had recovered the firearm used in the shooting.
The U.S. Capitol Police, which fought off a politically motivated and violent mob on Jan. 6, 2021, has been operating in a heightened threat environment since then.
There is anxiety on capitol hill as congress members are waking up to the fact that violent rhetoric plus the wide availability of high-powered guns and guns of all kinds can equal vicious political violence.
Republicans and Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Mace, are canceling events and taking other security precautions.
Mace also said she plans to carry a gun “at all times” and is weighing whether to stop driving her own car.
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who has received death threats because of his many public clashes with Trump, most recently over his push to release the Epstein files has stepped up security.
Congressional members are beefing up their security, moving public events indoors or canceling them altogether.
Lawmakers were already on edge following attacks on a range of political figures, including Minnesota state lawmakers, Paul Pelosi, and President Donald Trump.
Many also experienced trauma stemming from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters.
Some lawmakers are calling for protection for their families
President Trump’s team began tightening security as shock and anger reverberated through the White House following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
A Pentagon ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, was moved to a more secure location so Trump could deliver a speech
At Yankee Stadium, where Trump attended a game Thursday evening, the law-enforcement presence was expanded and bullet proof glass was installed
While the mood was one of mourning, some Trump advisers were scared for their safety.
Administration officials across the government are shaken by the attack and many are nervous about their safety.
