Let me share this story with you.
A friend reached out to
@ShowmaxNG intimating them of our technology and how partnership with us can drive automatic growth for their platform.
Our atmosphere network was in its infancy in 2023 and we were piloting our services and utilities platform.
@AtmosphereWiFI is a secure public
#WiFi platform that is host neutral but very heavy on innovation. We are not just a
#WiFi company but we developed a proprietary technology that allows virtually (all pun intended) any digital service or utility to be available to millions of
@AtmosphereWiFI users.
These users will never need to pay for data to access the service once they sign up for the Wi-Fi service. The service will be available to them. In addition all Wi-Fi users get a wallet through which payment is done.
So we are not just solving distribution, we were thinking about payments as well.
So imagine a banking app that is always on for millions of users who never have to bother their heads again about data before they can make transactions, or imagine this on University or polytechnic campuses where every single administrative or educational service is integrated and zero rated. Students will NEVER have to pay to access critical learning tools and admin portals such as
@NELFUND. So when
@IIOlorunnimbe wrote that profound medium article I smiled.
He gets it.
We were in the middle of a Proof of Concept (PoC) with
@GloWorld (
@GlobacomNigeria needed to offload traffic off congested
#3G or
#4G infrastructure without heavy
#CapEx requirement from
@GlobacomNigeria. The PoC was successful) when the introduction to
@ShowmaxNG was made.
The fact that we could pull off
#WiFioffload convinced them that we could work together.
The goal was simple. Integrate
@ShowmaxNG such that every single user signing up to use the Wi-Fi (it was 30 minutes free each day at this time at select LAMATA bus shelters and two markets Sabo market, Yaba and Ìpọnrí market Sùrúlérè) will automatically become
@ShowmaxNG subscribers. The KYC requirement was to be streamlined such that any
@AtmosphereWiFI user is automatically an
@ShowmaxNG subscriber.
The ultimate thing was any atmosphere subscriber will NEVER need to pay for data to watch Showmax ever again. They just pay the ₦1,500 or whatever the plan was then and they stream throughout the entire month.
Brilliant right!
So during one of the many meetings we had to advance this, one Ọpẹ who was country manager(or whatever they call them) then said something that threw everyone off and killed the negotiations.
We were close to arriving at a fair rev share, roles, duties and obligations when the Ọpẹ guy said:
"All this shakara you people are doing, you know you need us more than we can ever need you. You only have 20,000 users,not 1 million."
There was an awkward silence on the call and then I said:
"OK. When we hit 1,000,000 users, we will revisit this conversation."
He said he was joking.
@BiolaAkinyemi_ then took a cue from me thanked everyone and ended the meeting.
I was fuming.
@BiolaAkinyemi_ was livid.
We were just building out our infrastructure, the 20,000 users were from just two
@Lamataonline bus shelters (namely Ìkòròdú and TBS) with zero ads nor any form of marketing or customer acquisition. Just users discovering the Wi-Fi SSID and connecting.
We told them all this earlier in our negotiations. They knew they were buying into potential not a ready-made network but a potential that can scale to millions of users in months.
Recently the same friend reached out to ask if we were still interested, he mentioned that the Ọpẹ guy was no longer with
@ShowmaxNG. I told him we'll think about it.
I still have a very sour taste of that meeting in my mouth.
