Bad reporting. First the story doesn’t contend with the fact that a mature dense tree canopy provides a windbreak that mitigates windthrow. In other words, someone else cutting down their tree made this tree more likely to fall. 1/2

“Windthrow” is one of 2 forest replacing natural events in northern Minnesota. Straight line winds up to 105mph flatten entire forests sometimes. This pic is from last summer in north-central MN.
We can't catch a break. Trees aren't supposed to do that. This is called "windthrow." 🙃
The 50mph wind gusts 1.0" rain combined to pull these trees up from their roots just outside of Mayors Riverfront Park.
The rain softens the base, soil and roots and the evergreen trees act as a giant boat sail creates lots of leverage - resulting in tipping over.
The Kalamazoo Parks team is awesome and are already coming up with a gameplan for getting these removed.
Please take your time driving down Mills St. this week, crews will be in the area working on these trees.
Opening Day is Memorial Day (Monday, May 25). Single game tickets go on sale next Monday: northwoodsleague.com/kalamaz…
The shallow root systems of the Acacia trees made them particularly susceptible to windthrow during high winds in Tharaka Nithi.
Making opposition leaders like Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka tour impossible.
This "breathing" effect occurs because interconnected shallow root systems in thin, peaty soils transfer wind energy across the ground, a common phenomenon in exposed woodlands as documented in forestry studies on windthrow risks.
The need to set aside forests because they are old is completely irrational and has severely impacted rural BC communities while the urban policy makers are comfortably insulated. All old forests will eventually succumb to fires, windthrow, disease, or insect infestations.
How the tall & mighty fall
!! TIMBER !!
Yes many evergreens, especially conifers ten to have relatively shallow spreading root systems rather than DEEP TAPROOTS .. (vulnerable to WINDTHROW) BEING BLOWN OVER
Terminologies in news:
Blowdown: Tree or trees felled or broken off by wind, snow, ice or age. In forestry, windthrow refers to trees uprooted by wind.
It can generate an entire new chain of seral plant succession in a given area.
You can hear the wind is bad. You can see the wind is bad. You’ve been windswept real time in the streets clutching at the air / your hair / your clothes / the Holy Spirit. You know the videos. You see trucks sideswiped off the road. You see windthrow. But “why cancel the race?”
The eastern complex clocked Bemidji, MN with 106mph straight line winds and subjected some entire forests to “windthrow”…the 2nd of the two main disturbances MN forests face (fire being the other)
