CNN UPDATE: Authorities said they have detained a person of interest after a gunman opened fire inside a building at Brown University, killing at least two students and injuring nine others, the latest shooting to rock a U.S. college campus this year. MULTIPLE CONFIRMATIONS: NBC News and the Washington Post, citing officials briefed on the investigation, reported the person of interest as Benjamin Erickson. Erickson, 24, has not been charged and has not been named as a suspect in the shooting. Erickson took online classes with a focus on psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after graduating from high school in July 2020, and then transferred to Brown for this fall semester after his military service ended, according to the profile Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez was guarded while giving an update during a noon press conference on Dec. 14, saying that while the investigation was progressing "extremely fast," he was unwilling to share any information that may jeopardize future prosecution. Meanwhile, while the shelter-in-place order lifted around the Brown University campus early Sunday morning, the university's final exams have been canceled, and various businesses around the city remain closed. A vigil-type event was held at Lippitt Park in Providence at 5 p.m. today.
