In a quiet lab in Mangaluru, a scientist is solving a problem most of us don’t even see. Every day, massive amounts of energy are wasted as heat—lost, unnoticed, gone. But Dr. Sandhya Shenoy chose to chase that invisible loss and turn it into power. Today, she stands among the world’s top 2% scientists, for the third year in a row, recognized by Stanford University for research that could change how we power our future. Her work isn’t just theory. It’s about converting waste heat into electricity, energy that could light homes, run industries, and build a more sustainable world. No spotlight. No noise. Just years of quiet, consistent work, turning something we ignore into something the world needs. Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from loud announcements. They come from people who stay patient, stay curious, and keep showing up—every single day. And somewhere between experiments and persistence, they don’t just change science… They change what’s possible. #IndianScientists #WomenInSTEM #InnovationIndia #womaninScience

People whispered that she was a witch. They saw birds land on her shoulders and deer walk right up to her without fear. But Simona Kossak wasn’t a witch—she was a scientist who chose a life of wild wonder. In the small Polish village bordering the dark, ancient woods, the locals whispered that Simona Kossak was a witch. They told stories of how wild animals followed her through the mist, how birds rested on her hands like she was made of stone, and how silver-furred deer approached her without a hint of fear. But Simona was not a worker of magic; she was a woman who had decided that the modern world was far too loud to hear the truth of nature. In 1975, Simona made a choice that stunned her famous family. Her grandfather was a legendary painter, and she held a doctorate that promised a comfortable life in a city university. Instead, she packed a single bag and moved into the heart of the Białowieża Forest—the last remaining fragment of the massive primeval woodland that once covered all of Europe. She moved into a tiny wooden hut called “Dziedzinka.” It had no electricity, no plumbing, and no neighbors for miles. What most people would have considered a temporary hardship became her life for the next thirty years. She was never truly alone in that silence. Simona shared her bed with an orphaned lynx named Żabka, who purred with the strength of distant thunder. She raised a wild boar that grew so fond of her it followed her everywhere like a loyal dog. Even a mischievous crow named Korasek became her companion, famously stealing shiny objects from unsuspecting tourists and bringing them to Simona as treasures. While other scientists studied nature through cold microscopes and iron cages, Simona lived inside it. She looked the wild in the eye and proved that animals have deep personalities, complex feelings, and bonds just as strong as our own. Her life was not just a quiet fairy tale; it was a battle. When the government and logging companies brought bulldozers to tear down the ten-thousand-year-old trees, Simona stood in their path. She became a fierce activist, writing letters and filing lawsuits to ensure the forest remained wild. She famously asked, “Who are we to decide this forest must die under our watch?” Because of her relentless spirit, UNESCO stepped in, and the forest received the highest level of protection. Simona lived in that cabin until 2007, when illness forced her to return to the city. She died that same year at the age of 64, but her spirit remains there. Today, the forest is one of the last wild places in Europe. Tourists walk the same paths she once traveled with Żabka the lynx, and bison still graze in the clearings she fought to protect. Perhaps, among those ancient trees, a crow like Korasek still steals something shiny from an unsuspecting hiker. Today, the bison she loved still graze in the clearings because she refused to let their home be destroyed. Her life offers us many lessons: perhaps the moral is that true wisdom comes from listening rather than speaking, or that one person’s courage is enough to save a legacy for thousands of years, or simply that success is not found in comfort, but in belonging to something greater than yourself. She called herself a scientist because she knew how to listen; the world remembers her as a hero because she knew how to fight.

It is not easy to be a #WomaninScience, particularly in Theoretical Physics. I have had to deal with abuse, harassment, violence, bullying, racism, sexism, depression and micro-aggressions on a daily basis..as have many other women. But giving up is not an option for a scientist.
