Introduce words in photos or in context with things students know, Alber says. “Use analogies and metaphors, and invite students to create a symbol or drawing for each word.” Only use dictionaries to build on the definitions students created on their own. 9/10

By front-loading students with key words, they’ll be more willing and able to “tackle that challenging text,” Alber says. But pre-teaching vocab doesn’t mean “pulling a dozen words from the chapter and having kids look up definitions and write them out.” 8/10

⭐Pre-Teach Vocab Many teachers, Alber says, send students alone down the "bumpy, muddy path” of a challenging text, ill-prepared to grapple with the difficult, foreign vocab they encounter. The result? Kids lose interest, or fall asleep. 7/10

Design the question you ask ahead of time, Alber says, and make sure it’s “specific, guiding, and open-ended.” To make sure students are actively listening to the conversation, call on some to provide the gist of what was discussed. 6/10

⭐Pause, Ask Questions, Pause, Review Try this strategy when students are reading difficult texts or learning new concepts. Share a new idea from discussion or the reading, then pause (providing think time), and ask a strategic question, pausing again. 5/10

If you’re assigning a persuasive essay, for example, present a model along with a rubric to help guide students. Think alouds, meanwhile, can help you model your thought process as you read a text, or solve a problem in front of the class. 4/10

⭐ Show and Tell Many of us learn best by seeing something rather than hearing about it—students are no different. “Every chance you have, show or demonstrate to students exactly what they are expected to do,” Alber says. 3/10

To support students—and ensure they make sense of important concepts—it's important to scaffold learning by breaking it up into chunks and giving kids tools and structure to grasp each chunk. Here are Alber’s excellent tips for scaffolding. 2/10

What’s the opposite of scaffolding a lesson? 👉 “Read this nine-page science article, write a detailed essay on the topic it explores, and turn it in by Wednesday.” No safety net, no parachute—they’re just left to their own devices, says Rebecca Alber (@WordLib). 1/10

Quan passa catarsi.
