Cumberland Council residents are being ignored. 🚨Our community sent a crystal-clear message during the Voice to Parliament referendum when 64% of Cumberland residents voted NO [1].
That massive turnout made us the number one Local Government Area in Australia to reject that divisive campaign. Yet, the majority of this council still refuses to listen to you.
12 months ago the council voted to increase your rates and at tonights meeting they are coming for another rate increase. Last month the majority of Councillors voted to potentially blow $50,000 to $60,000 on adding NAIDOC Week celebrations to the event calendar.
I voted AGAINST the rate rises, and I voted AGAINST this new event funding.
Here is why: Your Money, Your Suburbs:
Hard-earned ratepayer dollars belong back in the community. It should be spent upgrading local roads, fixing footpaths, improving parks, and building essential infrastructure.
Flawed Priorities: This council is choosing to spend tens of thousands of dollars on an event aimed at just 0.6% of the council’s population (roughly 1,450 residents).
Cost of Living Crisis: Families across Cumberland are struggling to pay their bills. Forcing a rate hike on household budgets while handing out massive funding for niche events is a slap in the face to struggling residents.
Whats worse they are coming for another council rate rise at tonight’s meeting.
I will always stand up for the silent majority, fight against unnecessary spending, and demand that your money is spent on the basic services you actually pay for.
Enough is enough. Let's get council back to basics. Drop your thoughts below.#CumberlandCouncil#SteveChristou#RatepayersFirst#LocalGovernment#BackToBasics

Every prosecutor's office answers one question with every decision it makes - who is this office for? I've always believed the answer starts with the person who was harmed.
Not because the accused don't have rights - they do, and protecting them is part of the job done right. But a system that loses sight of the victim has lost its center of gravity. For forty years I kept that center and I intend to bring it to the whole office.
