Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis presents a spectrum of cases, each with unique outcomes post-surgery, as illustrated in these X-rays. In one scenario, a skeletally immature individual with 50 degrees thoracic scoliosis underwent selective thoracic fusion. This approach resulted in minimal blood loss, a swift recovery, and a quicker return to sports activities. Contrastingly, the second X-ray depicts a delayed presentation with an extremely large scoliosis. The patient underwent Halo gravity traction for 6 weeks, followed by a long fusion procedure and osteotomies. This method led to increased blood loss, an extended recovery period, and a prolonged return to regular activities. Both cases fall under adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and were treated by myself and my team. However, the outcomes varied significantly. Seeking timely medical intervention is crucial in achieving favorable results. As a surgeon I can only achieve few things. Person who can make the difference is you ! Remember, Your eyes cannot see what your brain doesnโ€™t know! Awareness, getting medical attention early is very important and a game changer! @AlderHey @RJAH_NHS @SRS_org @Scoliosis_SR @BritScoliosis @BasisStudy @BASSspine @NHSuk

Sadly we no longer have school screening in the UK. Howeverโ€ฆit may return if we can prove how efficacious modern scoliosis bracing can be through the @NIHRresearch @BasisStudy which has already randomised 428 newly diagnosed patients to Full-Time or Night-Time bracing.

June is #ScoliosisAwarenessMonth! In the UK, scoliosis is usually treated with a full-time brace (20 hrs/day). Other countries may often use braces only worn at night. The BASIS trial is studying if night-time bracing works just as well as full time braces. โ€จ#BASISstudy
