This is the translation:
In a Wondrous Spectacle of the Heavens, Seen on the Other Day of April in the Year LXI [1561], Many Persons at Nuremberg Were Astonished
On Monday, the 14th day of April, in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ one thousand five hundred and sixty-one [1561], there appeared in the heavens a very wondrous and terrible sign, which was observed by many honorable, educated people and artists over a long period. This took place early in the morning, from about four to five o’clock, and lasted until about six o’clock, as is described below.
At that hour, there was seen on the sun a dreadful apparition: at first, on the sun itself and thereafter lower down, two blood-red semi-circular arcs, like a bow or a crescent moon, one toward the east and the other toward the west, and within this space a round ball of dull and black color. Likewise, there appeared several other objects: two large ones, one following the other, and between these a great number of balls, which were fiery and, as they flew, trailed smoke. Among these were two large crosses, one on each side, and various rods, some straight and some bent, which moved as if they were being carried by the wind.
These things were seen moving rapidly toward the east and west, and some of them seemed to fight with one another. Some fell to the earth in great smoke, as if they had been consumed by fire. This spectacle lasted for about one hour, and then the objects gradually disappeared.
This event was observed and described by many credible witnesses in Nuremberg, and it was deemed so remarkable that it was recorded for posterity. May God protect us from such signs and wonders in the future, and may He grant us His mercy. Amen.
