Two years ago today (August 4, 2023)—just three days into my first term—I convened a meeting to tackle Kansas City’s vacant lot crisis head-on. One of the biggest challenges we discussed was how to secure the resources needed to clean up these lots so they could finally be ready for new homes.
Last Friday, exactly two years after I was sworn in, that vision became reality. The EPA awarded Kansas City $6 million to fund environmental remediation on the Housing Accelerator lots in the Washington Wheatley neighborhood.
This investment will clear the way for construction while lowering costs for builders and, ultimately, for families buying these homes. By removing the expensive barrier of land cleanup, we’re making it possible to build quality, affordable housing faster—and turning empty lots into thriving neighborhoods.
Now, I’m headed to the 2025 National Brownsfields Conference to build a robust network with subject matter experts and learn more about best practices for implementation in Kansas City.
