CoderDojo is a global network of free, volunteer-led coding clubs aiming to equip young minds, aged 7 to 17, with the tools to not just navigate but shape the digital world. It was started in 2011 by James Whelton, along with entrepreneur Bill Liao. Aspen Grove Solutions, with its intrinsic value on education and digital literacy, recognized this synergy and embarked on a journey to drive CoderDojoās footprint in 2011.
At the time, Tralee was the 3rd Dojo in the world and weekly coding workshops were facilitated, initially by Aspen Grove, and later led by industry volunteers and parents. In 2018, there were 13 Coder Dojos active across Kerry and almost 60 in County Cork.
Since the pandemic as well as the ever-shifting changes in workplaces across the globe (remote work etc), there has been a significant decrease in active CoderDojos across Ireland. This is reflected in County Kerry, where until recently there was only one active CoderDojo and 10 in Cork.
Aspen Grove SolutionsĀ are partnering with Kerry Innovation Centre (Tom Crean Business Centre) to re-ignite Coder Dojo in the South West region.
This rolls out this weekend on January 20th and the intention is to launch more dojos in April. To make it happen, we need industry volunteers to get involved. This is not only a social impact initiative but a chance to build a next gen talent pipeline by fostering an interest in coding in the 7-17 age groups.
