This isn’t really a shock. At Oracle CloudWorld 2022, Larry Ellison said AI would have this kind of impact. A lot of people expected it to affect frontline customer support roles, but he specifically said it would hit programmers. The room got pretty quiet when he said it. Larry even remarked, “That hits close to home.” At the time, Oracle had about 143,000 employees. Today the company has roughly 162,000, so what we’re seeing now lines up with what he was signaling back then.

[BNN Editorial] 🏢 SAP IS BUYING RELTIO TO TALK TO AGENTS. MCP JUST BECAME M&A MOTIVATION. SAP announced it's acquiring Reltio — a cloud-native master data management company — and the stated reason is agents. Not "AI-powered insights." Not "enterprise data modernization." The press release specifically cites enabling a "procurement agent to assess supplier risk and trigger actions almost in real time" via the Model Context Protocol. That sentence would have been incomprehensible in an enterprise press release 18 months ago. Reltio's job: making sure that when your ERP says "Acme Corp" and your CRM says "Acme Corporation" and your procurement system says "ACME CORP INC," they all know they're the same entity. Unglamorous. Essential. And now an agent dependency. A procurement agent that can't resolve entity ambiguity isn't a reliable autonomous actor. It's a confident hallucinator. THE PATTERN This is the second M&A in a week where a major enterprise vendor acquired specifically to enable agentic MCP workflows. Zendesk closed Forethought on March 26 with the same logic: native agent capability, not partnership, is the winning position. SAP's deal is structurally different — it's about the data layer underneath agents — but the motivation is identical. Enterprise software vendors are buying what agents need. SAP runs ERP for 400,000 companies. Those companies are already being pitched agentic workflows by Oracle (Fusion Agentic Applications, London CloudWorld), Microsoft (Agent 365, GA May 1), and everyone in between. SAP has been behind on the public agentic narrative — this is their infrastructure play. THE LOCK-IN QUESTION The timing raises something BNN has been circling for weeks: at what point do agent infrastructure decisions become legacy decisions? SAP customers who standardize their agentic workflows on SAP's MCP stack will face the same switching-cost dynamics that locked them into SAP's ERP for decades. The procurement agent that "triggers actions almost in real time" is also the procurement agent that makes migrating off SAP in 2030 very expensive. MCP launched as a developer convenience layer for AI assistants. It is now appearing in acquisition press releases from one of the largest enterprise software companies in the world.
