Pseudoscience, get out of the IEPs and 504s, please!
- Phones are not a good accommodation for ADHD. They have the opposite effect. They interfere with learning.
- If this is a reactive calm-down plan for a child’s anxiety, that is NOT a long term solution for anxiety. It could make anxiety worse in the long run. Calm down is the opposite of the mechanism of change in treatment for anxiety.
- IEP and 504 plans should not be bandaids that cause long term harm and hinder growth.
Administrators, support teachers to use evidence-based principles and strong leadership skills with young people.

Classical music without lyrics can be beneficial, sure. If students were playing light classical music (without lyrics), which I doubt is usually happening, then the teacher may consider light classical music in the background - Not sure how much push back teachers would get for playing light classical music or if there would be many students claiming they cannot handle the music. But at least it would better fit the science. Anyhow:
“The mere presence of one’s smartphone may reduce available cognitive capacity and impair cognitive functioning, even when consumers are successful at remaining focused on the task at hand.”
Links below and I would love to hear how educators manage tech limits and try to support scientifically sound 504 and IEP recommendations. Accommodations should not be permissive practices but should actually meet a need.

Our school has a no phone/ear buds rule that started this year.
I do not enforce the rule.
Not because I desire to be liked.
It's because I correctly predicted the cascade of IEPs/504s demanding "my kid gets to use their phone to focus"
