When you walk back into a hall you once taught in and find it packed wall to wall with young minds eager to learn, you feel the pulse of Kenya’s future.
Yesterday at Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) in Vihiga, I returned home not only as Principal Secretary but also as a teacher at heart. In a full to capacity Assembly Hall (about 1,000 seats), I lectured 2nd, 3rd & 4th year students, staff, the Dean of the School of Education & Social Sciences and other senior faculty on “The Paradigm Shift in Assessment” and “Competency-Based Assessment in Senior School and Higher Institutions.”
We explored how assessment is moving from grading memory to measuring mastery, focusing on learners’ ability to apply knowledge, solve problems, and demonstrate skills. I highlighted the three pathways at Senior School (STEM, Arts & Sports, and Social Sciences), formative and summative evaluation, and how higher institutions must align training with CBC outcomes.
Proud that this government's administration is embedding these reforms to nurture ethical, creative and work-ready citizens.
My heartfelt appreciation to the KAFU fraternity (my colleagues, students and mentors) for the warmth, energy and memories. You shaped my path and helped mould who I am today. Asanteni sana!
