There's a weird bit of technical debt embedded in D&D - the time and distance scales don't quite sync up. It's been in the game since the beginning and shows the game's roots in Chainmail.
This also ties to why 5e characters feel like superheroes.

in 1 dimension moving a point produces a line. In 2D, moving a line creates a square, in 3 a square forms a cube, and moving a cube in 4? This was the most I could compress Square & Sphere's exchange on escaping the confines of limited dimensionality... #nostos #Unflattening 2
ALT a tiny excerpt of a comics page - background is a hexagon/cube - the three facets relay a slightly different view of a scene from Edwin A Abbott's Flatland as depicted in Unflattening. In two facets, with wordless word balloons, a flat square recounts how we build up higher dimensions by moving a lower dimensional figure. When he suggests to the sphere there is a higher dimension where a creature could see the sphere's insides as the sphere can the Square's - the Sphere is furious and shouts Inconceivable. We see this scene in both the third facet of the cube which is mostly concealed by a more 3D looking version of the same scene as the Sphere shouts "inconceivable!" at the startled square with a word balloon that is turned and coming at the reader in forced perspective...
