On July 17, 2025, a Roundtable Conference on “Strengthening State Statistical and Data-Management Systems for Effective Policymaking”, was held at
@AIGGPA, BHOPAL. The event was a collaborative effort between the
@mpniti,
@DES_MP_bpl, and State Statistical Commission, with
@PahleIndia as Knowledge Partner. The session was led by Shri Ashish Kumar (Distinguished Fellow) and Dr Payal Seth (Fellow) and moderated by
@SujayPhatak (Senior Research Associate).
The discussion focused on the evolving role of official statistics and DDP estimation, highlighting the need for digital systems to balance scale, speed, reliability, and cost. Data from satellites, mobile/digital transactions (JAM), tourism footfall and electricity use can sharpen district insights. Shri Ashish Kumar also emphasised the potential of AI and ML, while noting challenges like the digital divide, data privacy, weak institutional capacity, and trust.
Experts from government, academia, and industry explored:
• Technical gaps in bottom-up GDDP (notably services, corporate, health, education data)
• Implementation barriers - small samples, interstate material flows
• Tech interventions - integrated dashboards, automated validation, pilot GIS/dashboard projects
Innovative ideas included:
• Localizing the National Substance Abuse survey and micro-chipping dogs for robust rabies monitoring
• Closer tracking of women-led startups
• A data-literacy module for researchers
• Vision documents and “dummy indicators” to validate DDP estimates at sub-district levels
