Yup...Hitler's V2 Rockets.
A chilling but perfect analogy...
Brought devastation to us with that new horror of not realizing the explosion was seconds away. How my Dad's generation lived through it, and conquered it all, is a wonder in itself.
When I used to be on the BBC Radio 2 Folk & Acoustic messageboard, I made 'enemies' instantly, as I loved the 'wrong' kind of music, Show of Hands, amongst others. I nicknamed my enemies The Moaning Minnies, (from WWI, although at the time I wasn't aware of the origin of that saying) as all they did was er....moan when all I wanted to do was talk about the beauty of folk music, the history and brilliant musicians.
The 'war' went on for many years with the English Traddies hellbent on getting me cancelled. In the end, they got the entire board canclled, as after myself and Diane, my No 1 enemy, hugely knowledgeable re folk music, knew Sandy Denny et al, were both cancelled, no-one else wrote on the board, barely at all.
The MMs were delighted, even though they'd lost the most popular music board on the BBC.
So it seems to be with the extreme Left now too, even if they, along with all others, lose our freedom of speech, they'll rejoice.
What they were unaware of was that behind the scenes Diane & I would sometimes talk to each other, normally, both realizing our constant bickering/battling (always done with humour and wit) was bringing many TO the board, where they were learning about their heritage/customs and traditional music.
Find 'The Radio Ballads' the more recent 2nd version made by the great John Tams and the younger folk generation back then. Ewan MacColl made the first version. Interviews and songs with those who worked in the Ship/Steel/The Mills/Fishing/Mining industries. Well worth a listen. Both versions are Capsule of Time.
About time another version was made, an updated one....with Steve Knightley,
@sohsteve Seth Lakeman,
@SethLakeman and his family, his brothers, Dad, with Katherine Roberts, Cara Dillon, Kate Rusby et al, would be incredible to hear.
