Another gem that ties perfectly into our eureka & brain waves chat: Barbara Oakley’s ‘A Mind for Numbers’.
She breaks down two brain modes:
• Focused mode — laser-sharp concentration on details, great for learning facts & practicing.
• Diffuse mode — relaxed, wandering mind (think alpha waves daydreaming) where big connections happen, insights click, and creativity explodes.
Super-focused ‘A ’ students who grind non-stop often miss breakthroughs because they skip diffuse time. Brain needs both—like Archimedes in the bath, Edison’s naps, or Mendeleev’s dream table.
Oakley says: alternate! Deep work → break (walk, shower, nap) → let diffuse mode do its magic → back to focus. It’s why ideas hit in the shower or right before sleep.
Changed how I approach learning & problem-solving big time. Anyone read this one? Or what’s a book/podcast that blew your mind on how the brain works, learning hacks, or boosting performance? Share below! 📚🧠
