The architecture of today’s war was built in 2021, when Israel was moved from EUCOM to CENTCOM. For decades, Israel sat under U.S. European Command rather than U.S. Central Command. This was largely because many Arab states refused to cooperate openly with Israel, and keeping it in EUCOM avoided placing Arab and Israeli officers within the same command structure. The Abraham Accords changed that. Israel, the Gulf states, and U.S. forces were brought into the same military framework, increasingly organized around containing Iran. The years 2021–2022 saw the construction of the intelligence-sharing, air-defense, and operational networks linking Israel with regional partners. The missile-defense cooperation and joint planning that became visible later were already being wired together. But Israel’s conduct during this war in Gaza, South Lebanon, and Syria may be forcing some of the largest members of this emerging coalition to reconsider the political costs of that collaboration. My view: the coalition survived because it was built around a shared threat. Whether it survives long-term depends on whether its members still see the benefits as outweighing the costs.
