There is a question that does not get asked enough in boardrooms. Not about governance. Not about compliance. Not about financial oversight. This one: Are our board members equipped with the capabilities they need to lead this organisation through what is coming next? Global frameworks and best practices in board development are valuable. The research, the methodology, the standards — they exist for good reason and they work. The gap we identified was not in the frameworks themselves. It was in how they were being applied. Understanding global governance best practices is one thing. Knowing how to contextualise them within local organisational culture, leadership dynamics, and strategic priorities is another entirely. That is the gap TQ Consulting designed its Board Development Programme to close — bringing global standards to a locally grounded experience that board members in this market actually recognise as their own. We delivered the updated version of the programme recently. By the time the last session ended, the organisation had already committed to a second cohort. That is not a marketing outcome. That is what happens when a programme actually speaks to people's real context — when board members leave the room thinking "this was built for us" rather than "this was built for someone else and adapted." Before you open your laptop tomorrow morning, try something. Take ten minutes tonight and answer these three questions on paper: 1. What is the single most important outcome I need to produce this week? Not the busiest outcome. Not the most urgent. The most important. The one that moves the business forward in a way nothing else will. 2. When will I do my hardest thinking? Block that time now. Before the calendar fills itself. Bezos puts his hardest decisions before lunch and protects his mornings. You don't need his schedule, but you need a version of the same principle: your best hours should go to your best work, not your inbox. 3. What will I say no to this week? This is the one most leaders skip. But every yes that doesn't serve the answer to question one is friction. And friction compounds. I've been doing this Sunday night practice for years. Three questions. Ten minutes. A piece of paper. It doesn't sound like much. But the leaders I work with who adopt some version of this consistently report the same thing: Monday morning feels different. The week has a shape before it starts. And the things that usually hijack their attention have a harder time getting in. Architecture starts before the week does. If you try this tonight, I'd genuinely like to hear how tomorrow goes.
