I learnt something weird about ecom from the ice ages
Was reading The Psychology of Money recently
And there was a section talking about how one field can teach you something important about a completely unrelated field.
The example was ice ages.
For a long time, scientists couldn’t understand why Earth had been covered in ice multiple times throughout history.
Then they realised something simple.
It wasn’t one massive snowfall that covered the planet.
It was layer after layer after layer.
Temperatures dropped.
Snow fell.
The snow didn’t fully melt.
Then more snow fell.
Then more.
Then more.
And eventually, those tiny layers compounded into something massive.
That made me think about market research.
Us ecom bros tend to treat research like this optional thing
“I’ll do it tomorrow.”
“I already know my customer.”
“I need to write ads, not read Reddit threads.”
“I don’t have time to go through reviews.”
But research works like the snowfall.
One day of research probably won’t change your entire business.
Reading 10 reviews probably won’t magically give you a winning ad.
Going through one Reddit thread probably won’t make you a genius.
But if you do it every day…
It starts stacking.
Layer.
After layer.
After layer.
And before you know it, you understand your customer at a level your competitors don’t.
You know
> what they’re scared of.
> what they’ve already tried.
> what they don’t believe anymore.
> what language they use.
> what actually makes them buy.
Then when you sit down to write an ad, you’re pulling from these layers of understanding.
And that’s when your ads start to print.
But research is so easy to skip every day that most brand owners do it once a blue moon.
It doesn’t feel urgent.
But boring things compound quietly.
Until one day they become an unfair advantage.
Do the research today.
Then do it again tomorrow.
Don’t expect any rewards for 12 months.
