I'm recruiting first-generation tenured faculty in STEM at R1/R2 institutions who identify as underrepresented minorities. I hope to find ways to support faculty success in STEM and inform policy around federal funding.

Also, many faculty have parents or someone in their families that are already faculty or associated with academia to guide them. Others don't. Hence it's a special achievement. I will try to find data that I saw a few months ago. #DEI and #FirstGenFaculty

This thread and all the responses. So glad I went to @ucl and studied science, but it was still a culture shock in many ways. And I even had the benefit of beginning my “education” with a free place at a direct grant school. #firstgen #firstgenfaculty

One thing I don't think anyone talks seriously enough about is the absolute culture shock of coming to university. Particularly, as a student from a more working-class background.

As a first-gen student, I've always known that other students with legacies in academia or family histories of college education have inherent advantages over me, but I don't think I've ever been able to see and understand that as clearly as today.
