I just finished work not too long back but was able to listen to Ramble On (LZ) which I am working on (have played for years but refining it). Also listened to some great flatpicking (Trey Hensley, David Grier and one or two others), mostly trad tunes.

Iconic bluegrass guitarist Doc Watson died on May 29, 2012, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 89-year-old Watson had fallen at his home eight days earlier. While not seriously injured, doctors realized an underlying medical condition required surgery on his colon. Watson passed away due to complications from the procedure. Today, we’re taking a look at the illustrious life and career of seven-time Grammy Award winner Doc Watson, whose distinct flatpicking style brought the acoustic guitar to the foreground during the folk music revival of the 1960s. This is the only way to achieve real speed. I would even use a steeper pick angle. Once you start trying to do something like sextuplets at 120bpm, flatpicking will cause too much string deflection. Van Halen uses the same attack angle but turned 90 degrees because he used his 3rd finger and thumb, causing a backslant instead of a front slant.

I love Billy but he’d probably tell you himself that Bryan Sutton is the current flatpicking 🐐.

Billy Strings mixes modern progressive bluegrass flatpicking with the mechanics of crosspicking, with some improvisational jam influences, he adds percussive right-hand attacks, but he plays it clean, and has a mastery of playing lead and rhythm at the same time... On a acoustic guitar. He may not be "the best" or whatever, but I'd be very interested to know who else has his particular skill set, because there cant be that many. Derek Trucks is an alien from outer space, and that SG looks awfully familiar.

“It can be at least as fast as straight flatpicking, if not faster, and also easier to do”: Used by everyone from Brad Paisley to Buckethead, hybrid picking makes impossible-sounding licks a reality – here's how to introduce it into your lead playing guitarworld.com/lessons/arti…

❤ #Mustlisten

Je me l'étais mis de côté Valérie☺️ Du bluegrass sur une voix soul, en plus l'un des guitaristes les plus talentueux de la scène flatpicking, avec Billy Strings. Taj Mahal sait tout ça..

You ever stumble onto a clip that reminds you what real American music sounds like? That’s Doc Watson on guitar and Earl Scruggs on banjo playing Cripple Creek. Doc Watson was blind. Let that sink in. No sight. Just instinct, memory, and fingers that could outrun most guitar players alive. Scruggs basically invented modern bluegrass banjo. Watson’s flatpicking changed acoustic guitar forever. Two Appalachian guys. No auto-tune. No smoke machines. No backup dancers. Just hands, strings, and decades of skill. Different era. Different standard. How many musicians today could sit down with nothing but an instrument like that?
