Huawei has unveiled its E-band long-distance full-duplex microwave solution operating in the U6GHz frequency band, designed to deliver ultra-high-capacity backhaul of up to 50 Gbps while supporting future 6G requirements.
The technology addresses the exponential traffic growth expected from wearable AI devices, AI robots, and other emerging applications. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) has set ambitious key performance indicators for 6G (IMT-2030), including uplink edge rates of 50 Mbps (10 times 5G) and downlink edge rates of 300 Mbps (3 times 5G), placing immense pressure on existing backhaul networks.
Over 60% of global wireless base stations rely on microwave backhaul due to its rapid deployment and cost-effectiveness, making it essential for wide-area coverage. However, the massive capacity demands of 6G require a significant leap in microwave performance.
Huawei's core innovation is true full-duplex operation in the same frequency band — simultaneous transmission and reception without additional spectrum. This doubles equivalent capacity to 50 Gbps per site or, alternatively, halves spectrum usage for the same capacity, dramatically improving spectrum efficiency and reducing operators' total cost of ownership (TCO).
The solution also incorporates high-power RF design to maintain long-distance transmission alongside high capacity.
Huawei's Microwave Product Line President stated that this technology provides operators with an optimal balance of performance and cost-effectiveness for building wireless backhaul networks ready for 6G.
More than 20 operators worldwide have already initiated commercial deployment plans for this solution.
