坂口志文教授らが2025年のノーベル生理学・医学賞を受賞した制御性T細胞（Tregs）。その「免疫のブレーキ」が自閉スペクトラム症（ASD）の子どもで変化している可能性を示した研究。
UC Davis MIND Instituteの研究では、ASD児36名（うち消化器症状あり12名・なし24名）と定型発達児（TD）18名を比較。ASD児においてTregsの数・表現型・遺伝子発現に変化がみられた。特筆すべきは、消化器症状の有無によって低下するTregのタイプが異なっていた点。消化器症状を伴う群ではGITR陽性Tregが、伴わない群ではLAP・GARP陽性Tregがそれぞれ低下。Tregの減少はASD児・TDともに行動面の困難と関連しており、腸管ホーミングGARP陽性Tregの低下はABC（異常行動チェックリスト）の不適切な発語のスコアの悪化とも結びついていた。さらにTregsの遺伝子発現ではエピジェネティック制御や代謝経路の乱れが示唆され、Tregsそのものの「アイデンティティの不安定さ」が浮かび上がった。
Tregの研究が、ASDの免疫・腸・神経発達のつながりへと広がっていく可能性を感じさせる一報でした。
