The mantra of "publish or perish" is no longer adequate in academia. One can no longer simply produce papers and rest on their laurels.
It begs the question: If a paper is published, and no one reads or cites it, is it even a publication?
A new more beneficial motto could be rephrased as simply "promote or perish". Academics must brand and promote themselves alongside their works, curate an audience, and provide value to the community. Marketing 101.
