Is it possible for the instascience podcast crew to say anything without self promotion?
The Harvard visa ban is shooting ourselves in the foot. Harvard is a magnet of global talent. I was a predoc at Harvard & then a NASA Sagan fellow there before joining Columbia, so I am one of the many immigrants who was trained and drawn to the US by that incredible institution.

It’s so weird to see science or academia rely on influencing and likes as a metric. Dance your PhD? Why? It was either a useful contribution or not. We might as well do thesis defenses on an American idol to further emphasize the instascience situation. Astro plot of the week…

one of my most popular lab investigations (creative inquiries into rhetoric/ writing/ disability/ media studies) was the Instascience lab, which had them re-explain high-level articles for instagram: docs.google.com/document/d/1… this was also a student favourite assignment

Sound advice to navigate the instascience landscape, but can we also agree it's a pretty sad state of affairs, and think of ways to bring a modicum of idealism back into science? Concrete suggestion: each year, the journal with the highest IF must be closed down.
The mantra of "publish or perish" is no longer adequate in academia. One can no longer simply produce papers and rest on their laurels. It begs the question: If a paper is published, and no one reads or cites it, is it even a publication? A new more beneficial motto could be rephrased as simply "promote or perish". Academics must brand and promote themselves alongside their works, curate an audience, and provide value to the community. Marketing 101. Read more here: cell.com/matter/fulltext/S25…
