Ten thoughts on what I'm calling "Future of Governance Studies." Eager to hear your own. 1/ The Constitution exists to protect individual liberty, impose republican political processes, and advance the general welfare. Deliberation, representation, and accountability are core mechanisms for realizing those ends. AI can arguably improve each of those tasks. But should it? If so, how? When? And subject to which constraints? 2/ AI is already altering those processes. It's shaping elections, analyzing legislation, and serving up news that informs how folks vote. These early signs of AI-informed governance should invite more than merely incremental thinking. 3/ The scholars best positioned to lead that thinking are trapped in fields designed to analyze governance as it exists. Nobody built a field to ask whether what we inherited is adequate to where we're headed. Too few scholars have the incentives and interdiscipinary support to take on what may seem like radical questions. 4/ More prospective questions about republican governance with AGI falls between disciplines. They commonly go unasked or, minimally, under-analyzed. Future of Governance Studies would exist to ask it. 5/ Its premise: republican governance rests on first principles. Representation. Accountability. Deliberation. Dispersed power. The dignity of the governed. Those principles don't change when the mechanisms for honoring them must. But how must / should / can AI alter those mechanisms? 6/ When AI-based systems allocate benefits, deny licenses, draft regulatory language, and plan infrastructure projects — the tasks of accountability and deliberation become complicated or at least undergo a transformation. We've got to study such questions. 7/ If we do not get ahead of these questions, we risk missing out on the full potential of AI to further constitutional values while also risking AI leading to anti-constitutional outcomes. On the latter point, inadequate attention to this topic may result in power migrating toward systems too complex to understand, institutions never designed for democratic control, authority accumulating precisely because it's too technical to contest. 8/ AI can make the republic more responsive than the Founders ever imagined. Citizens selecting tools that encode their values. Legislators confronting consequences before votes via digital twins and extensive simulation. Agencies measured by what they actually produce, not what they claim to. 9/ None of those improvements will happen by default. It requires frameworks. Doctrine. Institutional imagination. That scholarly infrastructure doesn't exist yet. 10/ The Founders were anticipatory. They built for a future they couldn't fully see. That's the tradition worth continuing. This generation's work is figuring out what self-governance requires when governance itself is being transformed.

"Mental states are not static. A mental state does not exist as an isolated event, independent of the other states before or after it. Mental states are dynamic." in Transition Dynamics Shape Mental State Concepts Interesting article analyzing transition states. At the same time, it's a bit shocking that cognitive scientists at top research institutions need to discover that mental states are dynamic. Is that actually novel in this field? I reached out the contact on the paper, Dr. Thorton, to check in and see as there is some much rich intersectionality, it would be a shame not to be interdiscipinary. psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?d… #neuroscience #cognitivescience #neuroscience #psychoanalysis #psychodynamic

Existential positive psychology: A new science based on the ancient wisdom of Yin-Yang dialectics “Yin and yang, male and female, strong and weak, rigid and tender, heaven and earth, light and darkness, thunder and lightning, cold and warmth, good and evil…the interplay of opposite principles constitutes the universe.” – Confucius The Yin-Yang symbol represents the essence of existential positive psychology (EPP or PP2.0) perfectly. It captures the three main existential truths of wellbeing and human flourishing: (1) Positive psychology is incomplete by focusing only on the positive (Yang) side, because it is only half of the circle, and the happy side also contains the seed of suffering, which can suddenly become the dark side (Wong et al., 2022 ). (2) To experience wholeness and inner harmony, one needs to navigate a dynamic and dialectic balance between opposites. Thus, sustainable happiness and wellbeing can only emerge through integrating the positive psychology of happiness (Yang) and the existential psychology of suffering (Yin), Thus, the synthesis of duality is the implicit unity or non-duality of Existential Positive Psychology (PP2.0; Wong, 2023; Wong et al., 2021). (3) To create an international positive psychology of wellbeing and global flourishing, one cannot focus on WEIRD psychology (Wong & Cowden, 2022; Wong & Tweed, 2021). EPP or PP2.0 is inherently multicultural, because it seeks indiginous expressions of existential universals. My dependence on the ancient Asian wisdom of Taoism and Confuscism represents my attempt to integrate East and West. In view of the above, the paradigm shift towards EPP is unavoidable and necessary, because it captues how nature works in harmony and how human beings can achieve wholeness, balance and harmony. This new paradigm moves positive psychology beyond the materialistic world view and the mechanistic account of human behaviors towards a more complete account of wellbeing. We invite the new generations of psychologists to join us and develop the new science of EPP to make this world better for individuals and society in all cultures. EPP is the positive psychology for all seasons and for all people, especially the disadvantaged suffering masses. (Image from Rhys, 2023) References Rhys, D. (2023, March 13).
