This video has been making the rounds in the past few months, with authors claiming this is an example of surface mount technology (SMT).
It looks cool, ๐ฏ๐๐ ๐ถ๐โ๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฆ๐ ๐ง ๐
The video is fuzzy (and not oriented correctly), but it clearly shows large through-hole components (what appears to be a mix of polypropylene and film capacitors, a connector and a big red LED) being inserted into a PCB board that has ๐ฎ๐น๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ been mounted with surface mount components (see the large black ICs). This kind of machine is ideal when mass-producing a
#PCB design that has ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฏ๐๐น๐ธ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต-๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐ป๐๐. The components are typically prepared specifically for mass production with preformed shorter leads.
The operating principle and speed are similar to SMT, but there are some noticeable differences:
1. The PCB moves instead of the picker head, as with
#SMT pick and place machines.
2. The pick and place jobs have been separated, with the โpre-pickedโ components being fed in on a conveyor system.
3. An arm under the machine bends the leads as each component is inserted
This kind of machine was cutting-edge half a century ago, but modern insertion machines look a lot more like SMT machines. The PCB is stationary, components are fed in through separate channels and imaging systems use complex algorithms to inspect each part before insertion.
There are many through-hole assembly methods suited for different quantities, component types and designs. Which method used depends on a number of factors, including:
๐ข The number and size of the through-hole components
๐ Production volume
๐ฏ Placement of other components
For example, heat-sensitive components and boards with high component densities may not be suited for wave soldering. Manual insertion is still commonplace for small to mid batch production.
