"Dear network, We are inviting applications for a PhD position at Politecnico di Milano on Additive Manufacturing of Tungsten for Nuclear Fusion, in close connection with TEF - Tech Europe Foundation and industrial partners. This project aims to process structural tungsten by laser-based additive manufacturing and sits at the boundary between #Metallurgy and #LaserEngineering. We looking for a curious and rigorous student interested in laser processing, additive manufacturing, thermo-mechanical modelling, refractory metals, cracking, in the context of application for nuclear fusion. This project will be carried out at the SITEC Laboratory, which offers a rich international scientific environment and access to state-of-the-art laser facilities. We will also place the PhD student in close collaboration with international and industrial partners, providing opportunities to gain experience with technologies beyond additive manufacturing. His research harnesses laser beams for welding, cutting, drilling, engraving, micromachining, surface engineering, and 3D printing—transforming manufacturing processes across industries. For many years, Prof. Man was also the world-leading author in terms of the number of publications on cavitation corrosion. Furthermore, he established PolyU's first high-power laser materials research centre with cutting-edge equipment unique to Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland at the time, leading to impactful innovations in dissimilar alloy welding, precision welding, wear-resistant cladding, and the surface treatment of biomedical implant treatments. His contributions extend from academia to real-world applications. Widely cited in laser processing, Prof. Man's recent focus on laser additive manufacturing of metallic components addresses key barriers to high-quality, cost-effective 3D printing. Looking ahead, he is developing alternative methods for high-speed, low-cost production of critical engineering components and biomedical implants, driving the next era of reliable additive manufacturing. He is also active in carrying out high-level consultancy work for local industries and has good relations with the industrial sectors, making a positive impact on society.
