Facebook memories from #MarRef Have we gone backwards since then?

Utter nonsense from Marie as usual. Here are the facts: - GRA was the subject of *years* of discussion & consultation. - There’s never been a “SSM Act” here. - MarRef & the GRA were somewhat linked solely to ensure trans people & their spouses wouldn’t be *forced* to divorce.
GRA was passed by Oireachtas on the back of the SSM Act without any consultation or discussion. Everyone wants gay people to have stable and permanent legal relationships. Men claiming to be women to enter women's spaces and sports was not envisioned.

Afaik he's not a Zionist but Gript seem to be going that way, coupled with the fact that he voted Yes in the MarRef referendum makes me think he's not fash enough for them any more.

11 April 2015, this temporary mural was put on the wall by Joe Caslin at end of George’s St, it lasted 1-2wks so didn’t need planning permission So much has changed in those years, most not for the better We can’t let the far right, hate mongers drag us back #MarRef

I believe that a lot of people involved in #marref and #Repeal #GRA campaigns weren’t in it for the good of the people affected. IMO many saw these as a way to land a final killer blow on the RCC in Ireland. Same people jumped on the trans issue for the same reason. Bad choice

Repeal & marref only ever set out to allow people carry on day to day life with dignity. Peculiar earthquakes in their own way and state ablism with its drag on people's independence & potential must be faced down. We already know we can win on liberal rights and make them pay up

Agreed, Keith. My then boyfriend lost a close "friend" over marref. When it got to the 8th, I lost some but I expected it. A true litmus test of friendship and they weren't worth having as friends.

I lost what I thought were friends during #marref. It took a little time to appreciate that a friendship conditional on you not standing up or speaking out for your beliefs was not something worth keeping. The friendships that survive are real, unconditional and priceless.

Sandie losing friends over her case sounds so familiar to most of us. (My ex good friend turned up at my tribunal like it was a spectator sport to support the film festival and was even caught taking photos of me and my family in the courtroom. Classy.) Most of us women who speak up learn this the hard way. The difference now is we’re no longer doing it quietly or alone ❤️ 🎁 telegraph.co.uk/gift/7548a89…

Catherine Connolly is going to win this by the same margin as for #repealthe8th and #marref. Oppressive and bigoted Ireland 🇮🇪 is truly dead and buried

Media commentary really backing this up now. Connolly, and her supporters, built and leveraged off a movement like Repeal and MarRef rather than a traditional election campaign. There’ll be many academic studies on the links from those referendums to the Connolly win #Áras25
I’m gonna say something that some may disagree with, but looking at the photos of the Connolly canvases online, I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen that sort of cross-party work since Repeal and MarRef #Áras

True. For most of the people who will be put in charge of planning the events, Catholic emancipation started with #marref and ended with #Repeal 💁🏻‍♂️

#Aras25 It's beyond a joke now. Surely once @gavinforthearas was chosen the rules were known on not associating the defence forces with his campaign. Or did he think that because @GardaTraffic were allowed to take a side on #marref without accountability, that he could as well?

Jim Gavin has taken down a THIRD social media post involving the defence forces. In this video he talked about “a call” yesterday morning with an officer serving with UNIFIL.

Which parties had enacting the GRA in their 2011 manifesto, so therefore have a semblance of a mandate? Why was it introduced as part of the SSM legislation having NEVER been part of the #marref debate?

I would agree with Brigid here. Referendums and elections have no connection whatsoever. In 2015 @labour made the running on #marref. Less than a year later they had their worst election result ever.
Geclan Ganley seems to think that the result of 1 referendum has some magical relationship to presidential election. It does not.

The way those two referendums were proposed, run and subsequently lost was all just a massive gift to the radical right who have used them to wash the nasty taste of defeat from their mouths after the MarRef and the 8th, and I refuse to believe that was entirely by accident.

#Aras25 Maybe O'Flynn is smart enough to realise that the issue of same sex marriage was resolved by the people a decade ago and that Steen is better qualified to be President that any other candidate on offer? Will those who voted "No" on #marref and #8thref be pariahs forever?
23 Sep 2025
How does a married gay man vote for Maria Steen - a woman who campaigned to stop same-sex couples from marrying. Extraordinary decision.

#Aras25 I also suspect they will use a deflection tactic we saw on #marref and #8thref on funding the campaign. Wild and false accusations of foreign money being used, ignoring that all significant donors have to be Irish and named. Dirty tricks to put you on the defensive.
If Mrs Steen makes the ballot, expect media to endlessly harp on about her being in the minority on marriage and abortion. And ignore that she is in the majority on immigration, last year's referendums, free speech, how many genders there are, and whether RTE is value for money.

Why would he jump on board this sinking sink in order to bail out Aontu's failed PR gimmick? Also as someone in a same sex union he may have issues with Steen's role in #marref.
