True in 1853. True in 2025. Women speaking plainly in public still gets treated as the most dangerous thing we can do.
Replying to @SeeRedWoman1
"No advanced step taken by women has been so bitterly contested as that of speaking in public. For nothing which they have attempted, not even to secure the suffrage, have they been so abused, condemned and antagonised." Susan B. Anthony, 1853.

Sara is easily one of the best writers I’ve ever met.
Delighted @SluggerOToole has republished my Substack piece, written as both an opinion piece and an explainer for readers outside Northern Ireland. I grew up here during the Troubles, left for London for a few years, and came back post-GFA. ‘Families were burned out of their homes in Belfast this week in openly racist violence. But Sara Morrison, who has lived in Belfast most of her life, argues that what happened on the Newtownards Road is the product of decades of political failure, an unfinished peace process, and communities that were never rebuilt. A vital if uncomfortable read.’ The comments are interesting. sluggerotoole.com/2026/06/13…

Damning that the BBC chose only to screen this gfx at 1.25am this morning. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

I’ve given up on the idea of finding love again, I’m just going to stay in with the cat watching weird 70s movies

This week has been an absolute dog’s dinner for our politicians and the luxury beliefs set. Three anti-racism rallies (because in this fraught world it not just enough to be not racist - you need your photo taken, with banners and crowds) today and yesterday, seldom a pip said for the man lying in hospital fighting for his life with serious injuries to his face and eyes, nearly beheaded, attacked by an asylum seeker who’d been granted leave to remain here. I’m glad their snobbery and contempt for working class communities hasn’t been confined to here, the rest of the world has clocked it too. No wonder this country is a mess.

(As an aside, I can guarantee that if anyone turned up to any one of those rallies as a Jew or a terf, neither would be made to feel welcome)

The most brazen stretching I have ever seen. It's a bit like someone who wins a fancy dress at school calling themselves an award winning fashion designer.

Not one liberal politician or journalist argued that the George Floyd "I can't breathe" clip shouldn't have been shared. They only want to stop you seeing the Belfast clip because it's massively, massively inconvenient to them - 'sensitivity for victims' has zilch to do with it.

Nobody would have looked at the George Floyd protests and thought, “What this moment really needs is a rally in support of the police.” People tend to ask why the reaction appears more concerned with defending a group over addressing the event that triggered the debate.

Last night, we spoke about the rise of Homonationalism across Europe. Gays did not wake up one day and decide to be right wing, we were moved to the right by progressives who increasingly speak over us rather than to us. Listen to the full episode below 👇🏻

Ugh God.. what's Elon going to make the disenfranchised, appalled, scared people of working class areas in Ireland and the UK do this weekend? Keeps me up at night wondering.

‘Ms Bartosch told The Telegraph: “When politicians make childish smears instead of engaging in debate, it’s a sure sign they don’t have the courage of their convictions. People deserve better from their elected representatives.” She added: “We hope this training gives her time to reflect, and that in future she will respect freedom of speech and association.” 👏 👏 👏

What is happening in Northern Ireland is awful. It’s wrong, and those involved must be held to account by the criminal justice system. What is unhelpful and utterly unnecessary is the side-swiping anti-unionists who are using their fake virtue signaling to sectarianise the problem. It seems some politicians cannot resist tarring everyone in some communities with the same brush. People see through their party political posturing. It’s just not necessary. I’ll resists the temptation to do the whataboutery. #Racism #Riots #ExemploDucemus

‘For all the liberal passion in promoting open borders and fair shares, it never extends to seeing next door’s bay-windowed Victorian pile with its hot tub and tradesman’s entrance converted to a HMO. Shutting these discussions down will not work. We are witnessing our third summer now of race riots, having found space for them in our calendar of annual outrages.’ This is fantastic, @GWalker9
