Hon'ble Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Mr Satish Chandra Dubey, in the presence of Mr Bidyut Baran Mahato, Hon'ble MP, Jamshedpur, and Mr Somesh Chandra Soren, MLA, Ghatsila, laid the foundation stone today for restarting the operations at Kendadih Copper Mines of Indian Copper Complex, the Unit of Hindustan Copper Ltd. in Jharkhand.
They were accompanied by Mr Sanjiv Kumar Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, Hindustan Copper Ltd. (HCL), Dr Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, Director (Operations), HCL, Mr Ghanshyam Das Gupta, Director (Mining), HCL, Mr S S Sethi, ED and former Unit Head, ICC, Mr Umesh Singh, ED and Unit Head, ICC, Mr Ghattuwar, GM (Mines), ICC apart from other senior dignitaries.
The revival of mining operations in Kendadih marks a significant milestone in the revival of India’s Copper industry, an important step towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat and the beginning of a new chapter in the glorious mining heritage of Singhbhum. The Hon'ble Minister of State and other dignitaries were warmly welcomed by the locals at the mining site.
Extending his heartfelt greetings to the assembled locals from the neighbouring villages, Hon'ble Minister of State for Coal and Mines said that Hindustan Copper Limited is blessed for having provided Copper for construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
The land of Musabani, Rakha, Surda, Kendadih, and Ghatsila is not only rich in mineral resources but also embodies an inspiring legacy of industrial development, technological advancement and nation-building, he said. The Kendadih Project inaugurated today is a commitment to carrying forward this proud heritage.
For decades, the Indian Copper Complex, HCL’s Unit in Ghatsila, has contributed significantly to the country’s copper supply, Mr Dubey added. Copper extracted from Surda, Rakha, Kendadih, Chapri and other mines has formed the backbone of Indian Railways, the power sector, defence establishments, telecommunications and industrial development. Even today, Hindustan Copper Limited remains India’s only copper-mining company in the country.
Moreover, he reminded, Copper reaches the bottom of the pyramid by its virtue. For instance, electricity conducted by Copper powers the farmers to increase crop production, the students to study and this play a significant role in all facets of life.
Kendadih Mine has a special place in the history of this region. While production was affected in earlier years due to economic circumstances, today HCL is prepared to move forward with renewed energy, modern technology and a strong sense of purpose. HCL has consistently undertaken important initiatives for the revival and development of the Kendadih Mine and today’s inauguration is the result of those sustained efforts, Hon’ble Minister of State asserted.
Kendadih underground mining operations will run fully on electricity, a move that will reduce the nation’s reliance on imported High-Speed Diesel (HSD). It also lowers fuel costs, supports eco-friendly mining and saves critical foreign exchange by substituting fossil fuels with domestic power.
Restarting of Kendadih mines is not merely a plan to increase production; it is also a vehicle for employment generation, regional development and social prosperity. Thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities will be created. Local youths will be given priority in technical training, skill development, and employment, stated Mr Dubey. Our objective is not only to extract minerals but also to integrate local communities into the mainstream of development and prosperity.
The Government of India is committed to ensure that the benefits of development reach the last person in society, he added. HCL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes will be further strengthened and aligned with local needs. Special emphasis will be placed on the empowerment of tribal communities, women, and youth.
Global demand for copper is growing rapidly. Copper has become an essential metal for electric vehicles, renewable energy, solar and wind power projects, smart grids, and modern infrastructure development, Hon’ble Minister of State apprised the villagers assembled at Kendadih. India is steadily advancing towards self-reliance, and in this context, projects such as Kendadih assume great national importance.
The objective of Hindustan Copper Limited is not only to increase production but also to promote safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible mining practices. HCL is committed to adopting the highest standards of modern underground mining technologies, digitalization, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation, Hon’ble Minister of State for Coal and Mines averred.
