This is a "What if" Scale modelm but its more near reality than it seems. Again, this was another "solution" to the problem of operating outside of airfields, expected to be targeted on a "First Strike".
In this case, the trick was not to have a plane with VSTOL capabilities. So the VSTOL capabilities would come to the plane!
To quote from What if modellers site.
"One of the more extreme submissions came from English Electric and Shorts Brothers. EE decided to design a conventional take-off and landing aircraft without the short runway or rough airfield capability the RAF wanted (the P.17A), instead opting to rely on Shorts designing a heavy-lift platform which would launch and recover the "TSR.2" from dispersed locations (the PD.17).
Obviously, this is completely bonkers, and I want whatever they were smoking... Instead I had to settle for wine"
(Needless to say, they didn´t went much further than preliminary sketches before ditching the whole thing)
An elegant weapon for a more civilised age
(With apologise to whoever made this model, I literally can't find the source anymore)
