Last week, I had the privilege to attend Reconvene in LA, hosted by @moseskagan & his wife. I am still internally debriefing everything I learned, conversations I had & the rooms I was in. Let’s break down what I mean. The Little Things: Most conferences have bad food. No, I’m not talking breakfast bowls from the airport, but nothing even close to what was available. From the extraordinary venues, to the food & cocktails all the way to the “gifts”, everything exceed expectations. Imagine (indirectly) getting the chance to share a bottle of wine with Mike Rowe? The People: While I am proud in what I have done in starting Molzer Development thus far, it was absolutely surreal to be in a room with 200 people that are humbly the best of the best at what they do. More importantly, everyone was just as eager to share their knowledge as they were to learn. There were some whales in these rooms. I’m talking ten-of-thousands of apartment units, billions of combined capital & some of the best operators & allocators in the country; all sharing their knowledge. The Takeaways: I went into Reconvene with a completely open mind on how to accomplish the following: how to grow and take my firm to the next level. So what did I learn? Without getting into too much detail, here are my biggest takeaways I am going to implement: Focus on like-minded, private capital that believes in my team & thesis Continue building what I am building: long term success will come (great quote: “Profit is what's left after taking care of the buildings”) There are many ways to “play the game”. Know what you are good at and double down. For me? Kansas City development/ redevelopment Lean on others. If you are the smartest in the room, you are in a bad room. I felt like the stupidest person at Reconvene; and that means I’m doing something right. I can not wait to be at Reconvene year after year, connecting with like-minded individuals & finding more ways to grow myself & firm.
