This is a GREAT blog post, with lots to think about. For those who saw my “Points of View” talk last month at #NWmath where I discussed the commutativity of multiplication, this relates, but goes MUCH deeper
New blog post! "Three foundational theorems of elementary math" (alt title "Elementary math is extremely rich and full of beautiful logical arguments and connections and everybody should pay more attention to this") #iteachmath blogs.ams.org/matheducation/…

I had to google "atmospheric river" -- yikes! Stay safe. 🤫 Shh... @BCAMT was my favorite online conference that I attended. Loved every session I saw, and the fact that we were able to use 'regular' zoom settings rather than webinar made it feel so intimate. #NWmath

Final thoughts on viewing of several #NWmath conference sessions today - although we want to connect in person at conferences, I must say that I so appreciated being able to learn from so many presenters through having access to the recorded sessions. @nwmathconf @bcamt Merci!

In her #NWmath conference session, @ShaheenMusani is sharing a unit of study for grades 6&7 on migration of peoples and how those big ideas and concepts create openings for numeracy learning experiences. #sd38learn

Data literacy is an important part of what it means to be numerate. Using the #slowrevealgraph instructional routine is one way to explore interests and issues in students' lives through mathematics. Thanks @jennalaib! More info here: slowrevealgraphs.com #NWmath #sd38learn

Thanks @NatBanting for your thought-provoking session on decision-making & cognition. "A mathematics classroom should connect all students as designers and decision-makers." How do you leave space for decision-making in your math classroom? #NWmath #sd38learn

Thank you @fawnpnguyen for the important reminders about mathematical modelling in the elementary grades. We have some work to do here in BC in this area even though this is one of our K-12 curricular competencies. Always a pleasure to listen to your wisdom! #NWmath #sd38learn

Next up is @carloliwitter as he shares the importance of projects in exploring social justice issues through mathematics. Framework for projects is: intro to situation, exploration with a focus on mathematical modelling, presentation to an authentic audience. #NWmath #sd38learn

And another recorded session from @BuildMathMinds about building fact fluency. What does it mean to be fluent with math? Develop fluency through three experiences - number sense routines, contextual problems, and intentional practice, including games. #NWmath #sd38learn

I appreciated how teachers shared their own professional inquiry questions as they engaged in mathematics teaching and learning through storywork. Below is a question from Joy Fast. Big idea in this session: Story helps students make meaning of mathematics. #NWmath #sd38learn

In the Indigenous Math Network session from the #NWmath conference, the teacher storytellers emphasize the importance of being "story ready" and knowing the story in many ways and its cultural importance (and knowing if the story is okay to share) before sharing with students.

I always learn so much from @NatBanting. His #NWmath closing keynote in 2018 inspired this post (and subsequent @BCAMT Vector article): chrishunter.ca/2018/12/13/a-…

Awesome to be able to watch sessions from @BCAMT #NWmath conference for 2 more weeks! Fascinated w/ learning how Ss gesture & visualize to make sense of grids in @drcathybruce session on ‘Objects to Think With’. I want to learn more about how to support development of this!

Last Saturday, I attended @carloliwitter’s brilliant #nwmath session on social justice & math. In breakout rooms, we discussed planning for a potential lesson. This work on food deserts immediately came to mind. I would love to use Joel’s activity this year! 🤞🏼 #mtbos #iteachmath
