It's weird to think, but Essex was once (and maybe still is) at the forefront of post-1945 UK housing design via people such as Critall, the Essex Design Guide (1973) & South Woodham Ferrers.
On the other hand: plotlands! 🤣

The Haven, on the Plotlands of Langdon Hills. Essex social history 🤗 plots of lands were sold to Londoners who built their own houses in the 30's. Only one remains after Basildon new town effectively closed them down. No landlords or rents so couldn't be allowed to continue😉

This day July 12th (1892) the first auction of ‘Plotlands’ at Laindon was held. From 1870 to 1939 with agriculture in decline and farms going bankrupt, large areas of Essex farm land, were described by a Royal Commission as ‘not fit for purpose’. More ESSEX HUNDRED HISTORIES.
