A collection of interviews and dialogues with filmmakers and film critics from roughly the '70s to the 21st century; sometimes an idea in one place is "answered" thematically by a remark elsewhere in the book, a reflection of Rosenbaum's inclusive process, as well as of his aesthetics and politics. The selections for this collection are very good as the ideas themselves can be quite fascinating, with a recurring subtext being postclassical film aesthetics. This, of course, is a reductive description of this book's many riches, which it has enough of to be considered a sprawling work of termite art in itself. Rosenbaum can write in long sentences, but he pretty much always puts clarity first. It's maybe the finest prose written by any writers on film. Rosenbaum had aspirations to be a novelist before, and his literary approach to journalism often combines the strengths of both creative writing and journalism. He remains an indelible influence upon my own writing.

Yeah this is mostly a consequence of the fact that history was a joke of a field before like the 1910s at the earliest. There just was not accessible reliable information on the premodern postclassical world
