A bit more detail: I use nginx as a reverse proxy for a few things like gitea(private git) and a mix of deno or rust apps. It is straightforward to setup fail2ban to watch for 40x http headers from the underlying app and ban based on whatever reasonable limits you set. Combined with using ovh or hetzner means you really don't need cloudflare. Most hosts like that have dos pretection and this will catch the other more annoying stuff/low effort attacks. Apache should work in a similar way as nginx but nginx is a bit more straightforward imo. That said none of this is a duct tape solution some people use cloudflare's proxy service for. This isn't a solution to hide vulns and neither should be cloudflare. For that reason I just don't see that as being a valid argument for using cloudflare. Find some IDS if you're paranoid.
