India is preparing a roadmap to mass-produce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as part of its goal to reach 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The plan focuses on the 220 MW Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), with the first unit proposed at Tarapur Atomic Power Station.
Unlike traditional large reactors, SMRs are designed for factory-based manufacturing and deployment in large numbers, reducing costs through standardisation.
A recent policy report proposes a $1 billion support package, deployment of around 25 SMRs by the late 2030s, and the use of up to 49 retiring coal power plant sites for future reactor installations.
The initiative aims to meet rising electricity demand from industries, data centres, green hydrogen production and economic growth while expanding India’s clean energy capacity.
