You may notice something new on the water this year. The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed Saildrones across the Great Lakes. Here are the ones launched in the Duluth area on Tuesday.

🇺🇸 The U.S. Coast Guard’s Great Lakes District will deploy wind/solar powered autonomous Saildrones on the Great Lakes starting in May. They’ll contribute to border and law enforcement, weather data collection, and other forms of domain awareness.

No one said the DDGs are mine hunting. They sailed into the Gulf through the Strait, so the Navy either swept a channel or knew that no mines were laid. Kingfisher would be the back up system to ensure they were clear. Second, two of the three LCSs were seen in Malaysia and Singapore mid-March, but they could have easily sailed back to the Strait, and Canberra was never seen. Plus, they have individual units that can be staged from shore or embark on vessels other than the LCS, along with H60s. The USN operates saildrones and GARCs to provide ISR in the area.
