Scruton understood that the defence of beauty is therefore not a side issue - it is central to the defence of civilisation itself. We are now living with the results: cities that feel hostile to human beings, institutions that treat tradition as inherently suspect, and a culture that often seems to take pleasure in desecration. Why has the right been so slow to fight back on this front?
